Safeguards

A proposal for fundamental change that does not include safeguards against itself is not a responsible proposal. Here is how the transition guards against its own potential failures.

No leaders, no gurus

The transition is not a movement centered on any person or group. There is no charismatic leader whose removal would derail it and no inner circle with special authority. The ideas stand or fall on their own merits, not on the authority of who proposes them.

Nonviolence is non-negotiable

Transition never initiates violence or uses it to impose political or economic change. This is not a tactical choice — it is a foundational principle. A society built through violence carries violence in its foundations.

This does not require passive submission to an immediate physical assault. When withdrawal, de-escalation, shielding, and summoning help cannot stop imminent harm, the minimum necessary protective action may be used and must cease when the danger ends.

Voluntary participation and the universal rights floor

Participation in any particular Transition organization, cooperative, association, or community remains voluntary, and every person retains meaningful rights of exit and dissent. The transition works by demonstration, not coercion.

Voluntary participation does not make universally enacted protections optional: no person or community may impose deprivation, discrimination, pollution, involuntary hierarchy, or extractive control upon others. Structural changes beyond voluntary projects occur only through public law, constitutional process, due process, and democratic authorization — and only after dependable alternatives exist.

Structural accountability

Power within transitioned communities is distributed, transparent, and subject to ongoing community oversight. Decision-makers serve limited terms. Information is public. Accountability mechanisms operate continuously, not only at election time.

The right to leave

Any person can leave a transitioned community at any time, for any reason, without penalty. Any community that makes leaving difficult has failed a fundamental safeguard.
